I've commented on this before, but with so many current issues revolving around what public employees make vs. what private sector employees earn, the federal budget, and what your elected representatives are doing to change or not change it I think it bears revisiting.

During my day I am often in my vehicle driving between appointments and as I'm not a big music listener I tune into news or talk radio. One thing that drives me crazy is the media's use of the word community. The media reporter or host will often say things like "the gay community believes that free condoms are necessary" or "the black community supports candidate John Doe" or "the Hispanic community wants to open the borders".

As I listen to most politicians they ask for your vote based on what they believe is right for you and promise if they get elected they will make sure what is right for you is right for everyone. They want you to sign up for their ideology, their view on how you, your neighbors, your country, and the world should behave; a monolithic bowl of jello (or koolaid) all marching lockstep toward the future.

Barring redistricting changes, occupational commitments, and other life events I have been inspired to seek office against Anna Eshoo in 2012. Why? Read this article on SF Gate - http://bit.ly/hmXRLe. Not only is it full of mis-information, but continues her viewpoint that the government knows what's best for you. A view I strongly disagree.

Thank you to all those who supported my campaign and the principals I believe are at the heart of most Americans whether they believe it or not.
We were able to put together 3.0% of the vote or 6,735 (as of semi-official results of November 24, 2010) voters. This might not seem much, but when you realize that there are approximately 2,000 registered Libertarians in the district I think we did quite well with over twice that number and a campaign budget that totaled somewhere around $200.00.

The United States defense budget amounts to almost $1,000,000,000,000 dollars (yes, one trillion) if you include $163 billion directly allocated for the "War on Terrorism" and well over $200 billion in related programs. Even the base budget is over half a trillion dollars. This makes up near a third of the total US budget and almost half of actual revenue collected through taxes and other sources.

In the last few years there have been repeated mentions by major party politicians about "reaching across the aisle". This refers to one or more major party members, currently Republican or Democratic, attempting to reach a compromise or agreement with the opposing party.

Last week I participated in a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Palo Alto with fellow candidates Anna Eshoo and Dave Chapman. During the question phase of this forum a question was asked about what one might do regarding Iran's potential for nuclear weapon development.
I felt I gave an inadequate response to this questions as I hadn't focused on foreign policy with so much going on here on the domestic front regarding economic problems, taxation, spending, government expansion and intrusion and other matters.

Following are the prepared text I used to give my opening and closing statements at the forum attended by Anna Eshoo, Dave Chapman, and myself today.
Thank you to The League of Women Voters of Palo Alto and other sponsors for providing this forum today.
While preparing for this event dozens of thoughts passed through my mind, but I realized that we could be here for days, so I refer anyone who is interested in more detail on my thoughts and positions on issues to refer to my website at www.paullazaga.org.

I recently received the following question on behalf of the AARP:
"Since the recession began, Americans have been hit with devastating job losses, shrinking retirement savings, declining home values and rising health care costs - many older Americans nearing retirement have been disproportionately impacted. What is your plan to help older workers get back to work and to improve economic security for people of all generations?"
Here is the response I gave:
